I first met Rocko when we promoted Journey at Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu a few years back. When he announced that he’d be our opening act for the show, I thought it was the best idea ever - roadies opening for the band, hah! I was right up there at the stage, hooting & hollering, checking out the audience reaction to these grungy-lookin’ guys (hey, we’d worked all damned day). The crowd went wild when they found out that these guys were working stiffs just like them! It was too much fun.
Journey returned the following year, so we hooked up with Rocko again. Some of the Journey fans called me to ask whether the roadies were on the lineup. Rocko had fans!
But then he went on to his “regular” gig (not that Journey isn’t a regular gig) with U2, where he is the star attraction of their illustrious road crew - one of the hardest-working road crews in the biz. So when I heard that he’d been asked to open their show - the final show of their tour, at Aloha Stadium, I was in hog heaven. Good for Rocko! Good for the Devils!
There was no way I was going to miss this. So I flew back from Cali to attend the show, fidgeted through that other opening act…uhm…Pearl Jam (I love them, but I wasn’t there to see them)…and probably screamed the loudest of everyone in the press box (and possibly the entire Stadium) when Rocko and the Devils took the stage.
They rocked the house solid. I was proud of my pal.
The above clip is of “Eleanor Rigby,” which opened their set. I turned to Tom when Rocko started singing and said, “Ya know…this is the perfect song for them. Perfect.”
Yes it was.
