The Kid has been initiated into the world of Renaissance Faires! I packed the family into the car and drove them to the Escondido RenFaire this past Sunday. There were three stages with pretty constant entertainment, a battlefield, and scores of crafters and food booths. The Queen’s court was quite active, which was very pleasant, and the madrigals were wonderful. Sprinkled in and around the for-profit ventures were demonstration tents where the residents were hammering armor, sewing ruffs and dancing with gypsies. The attendance (by those of us who bought tickets) was sparse…kind of sad, really, considering it was a pretty decent RenFaire (from my very limited point of view).
She wanted to look at corsets so we visited the various dress tents. There were some gorgeous albeit pricey items on display at some of the booths, and she found a dress that she wanted to wear to her 8th grade graduation ball (on a cruise in San Diego harbor). Assuming I find a job by then I’ll get it for her. It was absolutely stunning and fit both the medieval mode and modern mode – yay!
She even ran into a friend from school whose family performs at the event. That made her day (the kid in the yellow shirt is her classmate, the performer on his left is his dad).
