From her sickbed, that is. Three days of mostly sleeping, mostly feeling like crap, crap, crap.
Then I wake up this morning feeling sorta disoriented from the breaking fever. Nevertheless, I happily indulge myself with some cnn.com (because that’s what I read in the mornings) and I find this silly story.
Prince owns his performance rights. All Radiohead is entitled to is a call to ASCAP/BMI/SESAC to find out when they can expect their share of the licensing fees from the live concert. Must’ve been a slow news day for CNN to not bother with consulting experts about this story before they ran it. Not that all experts are equal; some are much better than others…but I digress.
So Prince did Radiohead a favor by taking down the unlicensed video. Unauthorized and therefore royalty-free distribution is breaking the music business in a manner somewhat similar to account hacking in online games. It’s fine if the artist and/or songwriter consider YouTube or any other site part of their guerrilla marketing plan; it is a violation of international copyright law if they don’t.
Good for you, Prince. I would’ve loved to have seen the clip myself but I wholly support your decision to ban it from the internet.
