She has risen!
Filed by NinjaDoll on May 31st, 2008

From her sickbed, that is. Three days of mostly sleeping, mostly feeling like crap, crap, crap.

Then I wake up this morning feeling sorta disoriented from the breaking fever. Nevertheless, I happily indulge myself with some cnn.com (because that’s what I read in the mornings) and I find this silly story.

Prince owns his performance rights. All Radiohead is entitled to is a call to ASCAP/BMI/SESAC to find out when they can expect their share of the licensing fees from the live concert. Must’ve been a slow news day for CNN to not bother with consulting experts about this story before they ran it. Not that all experts are equal; some are much better than others…but I digress.

So Prince did Radiohead a favor by taking down the unlicensed video. Unauthorized and therefore royalty-free distribution is breaking the music business in a manner somewhat similar to account hacking in online games. It’s fine if the artist and/or songwriter consider YouTube or any other site part of their guerrilla marketing plan; it is a violation of international copyright law if they don’t.

Good for you, Prince. I would’ve loved to have seen the clip myself but I wholly support your decision to ban it from the internet.

Jurassic Park still makes me squirm
Filed by NinjaDoll on May 22nd, 2008

Fifteen years later, Jeff Goldbloom’s line about Pirates of the Carribean is still a great line, Sam Neill still looks sexeh (and is hilarious with those kids), and I still reach for Xanax thanks to the awesome sound effects. I’m only mentioning this because it’s on TV tonight.

Indiana Jones was pretty ok. Harrison’s still cool and that Shia LaBeouf - strange name and nostrils and all - is a spitfire. I was extremely grateful that Karen Allen had packed on a little weight since the first movie. Between her chubby cheeks and Harrison’s jowls, I didn’t feel so bad about my aging carcass. Heh.

Mom is doing better now. It’ll take a while before she’s ambulatory. Eight hours in E.R., a shot of morphine, and a couple of Vicodin later, the good doctor pronounced that she had a muscle strain. And mom said, “See? I =told= you it was a muscle.” There’s no living with her after that, lemme tell ya. Too bad she didn’t remember that she fell down in the hallway on Friday night =before= we went to the hospital. But hey, I’m just grateful she didn’t break anything.

Alas, it brings me to the realization that mom needs an assisted care facility. I’m not a very good care giver. Shopper, yes. Nurse, no. She needs more than I can offer, particularly since I’m still on the second floor. Even if it’s a temporary arrangement, she needs to be with professional folk who know how to deal with her issues. This may prove quite tricky, as the hospital’s social workers (specialists on placing geriatric E.R. patients) are so damned hard to reach. I have to try again tomorrow.

And all of this has been so darned crazy that I completely forgot to feed Emily’s cats on Saturday =/ I felt so stupid when I ran into her today…I’d even forgotten that I’d forgotten!

It’s catching, this Alzheimer’s thing.

Age of Conan just arrived from Gamestop. Installing is taking 4evR. Dammit!

So! Whatcha folks been up to, hrm?

I’m a California driver! A hungry one, too.
Filed by NinjaDoll on May 12th, 2008

I got pulled over the other morning on the way to work for running a stop sign. That involved getting my first traffic warning, and later my first traffic ticket. Wewts! Fortunately the ticket was for not being able to locate my insurance card. Easily cleared up with a visit to the DMV.

I’m getting homesick, sorta. I think it’s the food. I’m craving a trip to Zippy’s, Gyotaku, Kam Bowling Alley (for awesome oxtail soup!), and Rainbow Drive Inn for ono breakfasts. Cyd and I pigged out the last time we were home; she downed a gallon of Green River while I indulged in loco moco (fried rice kine) and endless Zip Mins. There are days when I can’t get Marukai out of my mind because they sold the best ika seaweed poke ever! Let’s also not forget the malasadas, Napples, Libby’s manapua, and massively massive Hawaiian plate lunches at You Hungry! OMG I miss them all!

This is, of course, all because I’m now on a diet. Well, I’m on one starting tomorrow because the prime rib Broos and I had at Outback tonight kind of chucked my Monday attempt into the crapper. My goal is to be 30 lbs. lighter by Christmas. I want to look as good as Steph!

G’bye, pho (yeah, it’s fattening). Aloha, Khan’s Mongolian. So long, Gina Lollobrigidas.
