Don’t Panic! And don’t forget your towel!
Filed by NinjaDoll on April 28th, 2005

The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy premiered here tonight so I took Cydney to what I hoped would be a halfway decent rendition of one of the funniest stories I’ve ever read.

While I wouldn’t say I was disappointed, the movie didn’t have the uproarious, twisted impact of the book. If you’ve never read Hitchhiker’s Guide, though, it will likely strike you as hilarious. Of note:

Mos Def (whom the Hyatt Regency Waikiki kicked out of his deluxe oceanfront suite when he appeared for a concert with us six weeks ago — boy do I get to rub their nose in it bigtime!), plays Ford Prefect to…well…prefection. He’s such a natural actor and the part suits him well. I enjoyed seeing this side of the otherwise gifted rapper who is also one of the classiest guys I’ve ever met.

Sam Rockwell makes for a fabulous Zaphod Beeblebrox, though his funniest moments come from superb editing. Just the right amount of dumb and dumber, packaged in a very hunky piece of Eye Candy. I’d see this movie again just to envy his hair.

Stephen Fry is the book. He delivers his lines in typical Fry style, downplaying the punchlines as if they should be obvious rather than chucklesome. I’d forgotten how good he is at this sort of thing…it’s too bad the role didn’t call for an on-screen appearance!

Then, of course, there is John Malkovich’s cameo as Humma. He’s so good. He’s always so good. A great bundle of intensity on mechanical legs!

I think I’d give it 4 out of 5 stars. It just didn’t send me out of the theatre in stitches like Men In Black but it wasn’t a total waste of an evening. Oddly enough, Douglas Adams is listed as executive producer…whoever wrote his movie & serial rights contract is my juris prudence hero :)

Cydney, being eight, left the theater singing the song of the disappearing dolphins. She was quite upset, however, when the humpback whale…well…you’ll have to see the movie to appreciate what they did with that scene :P

I’m having a crazy week
Filed by NinjaDoll on April 23rd, 2005

On Tuesday night we had a concert with Jimmy Buffett, tonight we have one with Norah Jones, and somewhere in between I’ve broken a nail.

I left the rent deposit for the other parent to handle because I was busy; the hissy letter I got from my landlord when my rent wasn’t paid put me over the edge. I had this month’s =and= next month’s rent delivered pronto. I’m still not over being uberly pissed, though. That extra money was supposed to go toward my trip to Vancouver at the end of the month. Guess who’s not going on a trip now :(

The owners of my building were “informed” that I had a dog in the apartment and have threatened me with eviction…which wouldn’t be so bad except everything here is renting for exhorbitant prices that I can’t afford (I don’t know how anyone else in this state affords them!), and if I can afford it, it doesn’t allow pets. So our newfound family member is going to stay with a friend’s friend (she happens to be a dog fosterer and trainer) until I can find a place that isn’t so squeamish about animals.

My building manager hasn’t called me back about the paint he’s supposed to leave me to finish my room so one wall is a beautiful dusky beige and the rest of the room is still white. It wouldn’t be so bad if his painter had done just the one wall but he did the one wall and a little bit here, a little bit there…

The boss is leaving for ten days in Bangkok, one of my assistants is still on vacation (I wouldn’t call working sold-out concerts a vacation but since said concerts were by U2 it’s a vacation, dammit!) and I’m feeling mightily overcome by the combined workloads.

To top it all off, my Eye Candy has claimed his own immense workload and I haven’t seen him in a few days. That always puts me in a foul mood. And, sadly, I’m tiring of World of Warcraft and there isn’t another MMORPG that’s catching my attention. My only online recreation during these depressing evenings has been jumping over to Gryph’s website to peek at her ChairCam — and I am grateful she put the thing up, let me tell you!

Sigh. I can’t wait for Monday. Next week can’t be as bad as this one…can it?

Need help

Is anyone familiar enough with css that they can tell me why, on my comments pages and on my pages pages, there’s a big blank space just under my title bar? It’s annoying the heck out of me and I can’t see where it gets fixed :(
